4 Boys

4 Boys is a new program for elementary and middle school boys that YouthExpress NM is developing at the request of elementary schools in Santa Fe. It engages young boys by providing activities often not possible in a classroom setting. Each hour-long session begins with a group circle and check-in followed by an activity –- indoor/outdoor circle games and other playful competitions, an art project, music/percussion, outdoor sports. Activities that are fun, expend energy, build skills and solidarity.

A key part of the program is a dialogue at the end of each session with the YouthExpress mentor, who serves as a model of a strong, caring adult male. He creates a space where boys feel free to ask questions and talk about concerns, curiosities, troubles, joys – anything that’s on their minds. Boys share their take-away impressions and learning.

There's a special, pressing need for programs dedicated to boys. Why? Boys are falling behind in most metrics of social/emotional well-being and academic success – a disturbing trend in the U.S. that's widely unrecognized. Boys need opportunities to flex, learn, and grow as boys. This is especially true during the elementary and middle school years when emotional and behavioral patterns are being formed.

When our boys become adults...we become inner voices they often hear in their work, relationships and spiritual practice."
